New Ruins



How will our descendants in 1000 years view the ruins of today’s buildings? What traces will be left as the superficial layers peel off and dissolve in the perpetual solution of time?

New Ruins imagines a new multi-generational dwelling as it might be seen by those looking back on the anthropocene. It provokes us to consider our designs as though we were geologists of the future, excavating meaning in the mute physical forms laid down by the flux, heave and passage of time.








This speculative project is a provocation about how we currently build — do we really build as though we expect our buildings to last 1000 years, even as ruins, as many of the great buildings we currently admire were built? And it is a challenge to ourselves to think intergenerationally as we strive to live within planetary boundaries, to be custodians of this matter, in this moment. The duplex-and-a-half plan affords many configurations of inhabitation — multi-generational family, sharehousing, friends, caretaking — anticipating a social fabric in flux as families and communities adapt to cascading climate changes. Interlocking concrete panels are designed to endure the corrosions and vagaries of time. The concrete panels are imagined in a scale model with sandstone to simulate the erosion and patina of wind, rain, ground movement and the marks left by human and non-human inhabitants.
