The Main Chair
The timber chair is made with a tree that was burnt in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Drouin, Victoria, bordering Bunurong/GunaiKurnai country. Bushfires are increasing as the climate warms and due to the mismanagement of Australian forests since colonisation. The chair speaks to the devastation of fire and to the beauty of the trees and landscapes that are affected.
The blue chair is made from used non-renewable food packaging and other waste consumer plastics. It speaks to the situation we are in today: humans have already produced such a large quantity of un-renewable resources in plastics and oil-based materials. Designers must find ways to lock them up into valuable products to divert them from landfill, give them a new life and curb environmental damage.
The chair can be made from a single 1.2 x 2.4m sheet, a standard industry size for many types of material, to minimize waste offcuts.
